R2. Effects of Bromocriptine on Improving Outcomes for Stroke Survivors with Hemispatial Neglect

Sandra Weintraub, Ph.D.
sweintraub@northwestern.edu

The syndrome of hemispatial neglect has been associated with impaired functional rehabilitation of patients with right hemisphere damage. Even though there is evidence to support the role of dopamine in the control of attention and neglect, only a few studies have evaluated pharmacologic intervention in the human neglect syndrome. The overall aim of this project is to learn whether patients with hemispatial neglect benefit from dopamine agonist therapy, namely, Bromocriptine. Subjects are given bromocriptine or placebo in a double-blind, crossover design and are tested with neuropsychological measures after escalating doses. In order to better understand the mechanism whereby bromocriptine affects attention, the effect of bromocriptine on attention in normal volunteers is also being studied.
